On March 9, 2026, 8 sets of model SPB120 biomass burners were shipped by air to New Delhi. With a rated heat capacity of 1,200,000 kcal/hour, these burners will be deployed to support Greencoal projects in India.

Greencoal, also known as Harit Koyla or Bio-coal, is produced by converting municipal solid waste (MSW) and agricultural residues into clean solid fuel via torrefaction, which is then used as a partial substitute for coal in power generation.

India’s Greencoal Project is a scalable, waste-to-clean-fuel model that addresses both municipal solid waste management and power sector decarbonization. Led by NTPC, it has become a flagship initiative under the national clean energy and self-reliance missions, with the Varanasi plant as the successful demonstration and the Greater Noida plant set to be the world’s largest of its kind.

As a major technology partner, SIMEC has supported three Greencoal production lines in India. Each line is equipped with 2 biomass burners, plus 2 additional units as on-site spares, in total 8 burners. Raw materials of the bio-coal production lines include RDF, rice husk and paddy straw. The rated input capacity is 12 tonnes per hour (tph). The torrefaction process operates at 270 degrees Celsius. The biomass burners supply initial heat to start the torrefaction reactors. After the torrefaction reaction commences, syngas generated from raw materials provides self-sustaining heat to maintain continuous operation.

SIMEC biomass burners are designed for 24/7 continuous operation. Customized for multi-fuel application, they can burn cashew nut shells, wood chips and wood pellets. The applicable fuel size ranges from 6×6 mm to 35×35 mm. The flame outlet channel and combustion chamber adopt an integrated design of metal structure and refractory materials. The standard draft to be maintained inside the chamber for proper combustion is 3900-4600 m3/h. It can be customized if there’s special requirement. During continuous operation, the maximum temperature reached at the surface of the burner is 50~80℃.

To adapt to low-grade fuels, the following arrangements are provided for tackling the clinker formation:
1. The automatic ash cleaning system is mounted at the bottom of the flame outlet of the burner. It works synergistically with the combustion system, ensuring that most ash and sludge are cleaned up in time.
2. The optimized chamber structure and multi-stage air design enhance the airflow turbulence inside the chamber, ensuring uniform flame distribution, avoiding the formation of local high-temperature points, and simultaneously cooling the furnace wall surface to prevent slag melting.
3. Precise control of the air-fuel ratio ensures complete combustion and avoids the generation of highly viscous ash slag.
4. In key areas of the chamber, temperature is monitored in real time. Once it approaches the ash slag softening temperature, the combustion load is immediately reduced or air supply is adjusted to prevent slagging.

High-precision pressure transducers are installed in the core area of the burner to collect pressure data in real time and transmit signals to the control system. When the pressure approaches 80%-90% of the safe threshold, the system will issue an audible and visual alarm to remind operators to conduct inspections.
